Happening mainly throughout the period in the middle of the widespread rebellion in 1832 in France, Les Misérables is the life story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris, France who was sentenced for 19 years as a consequence of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he breaks free and seeks a second chance to live his life; Valjean then adopts a different name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still protecting his newfound lifestyle and avoiding Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and intent on capturing and bringing the ex-convict to justice.
Happening over a period of almost twenty years across its two acts, Valjean happens to be involved by accidental means with a few important characters throughout the show – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory employees who is the mother of an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the foster child of Jean Valjean, who turns out to be Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student on the side of the revolt and the destined love match of Cosette. Side roles shown in the play are the Thénardiers, immoral innkeepers who pay no heed to their daughter and are engrossed with taking advantage of the chaos; Eponine, their child, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the insurgency specifically Gavroche, a naive but cunning child, and the revolt’s fearless leader, Enjolras.
This motley group of characters entangled by serendipity and their individual hardships are brought to life on a live platform, not just with the show's 1800s French-inspired costume and stage creations, but most especially with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from start to finish. With famous songs including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its astounding score, Les Mis is able to communicate the real and unmasked personalities hiding behind every character that unveils the magic of Les Mis in the theater.
