More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the initial musical script for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (previously in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s original novel of the identical name, Les Mis was adapted into a theater play as a fully sung-through show, which was an enormous achievement in that decade.

After an initial showing in Paris, France, there was evidently overwhelming support to make an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the soundtrack, he instantly fell in love and agreed to produce an English interpretation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the new lyrics. The English production of the musical initially performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it quickly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, London theatre's premier venue, and remained there for 19 years. The musical then transferred once more to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and maintains its shows up until present day. Counting all its tours since its creation all those years ago, Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running musical of all time.

With almost 4 decades in London solely and not even enumerating its tours in other locations, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is incontrovertible that Les Misérables perseveres and is spectacular in the eyes of the play's attendees. The plot and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and selfless love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings because of the evident heart behind each song and act presented. Les Misérables has become so successful that the show has been adapted to movies repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on a different platform.
