Six – The Musical Tickets:
“One of the cleverest, wittiest, flashiest musicals in town!” – Daily Beast
“The sextet of cheeky spouses of King Henry VIII take to the stage in triumph!” – Variety.
“Ferocious, feminist, and fun!” – Mashable
In this charming musical, the Tudor Queens are given incredible personas similar to today’s biggest pop stars! And no, they’re not singing about diamonds or taking over the world, they’re singing about the challenges and absurdities they went through at the hands of the King! In history, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherin Howard, and Catherine Parr were together on stage. Just imagine the havoc that ensues having all of these wives together in one room. This modern retelling of the sufferings these women went through, such as divorce, beheadings, death, and whatnot, provides a grim but funny perspective on what it takes to be a Tudor Queen. These ladies are guaranteed to perform with incredible talent, passion, and overwhelming stage presence. Fans can look forward to a plethora of outstanding music numbers, which thereby earned them the Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2022!
Six the Musical premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017. The musical was a project by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. Pulling inspirations from a docu-series about the wives of King Henry and a Beyonce concert, the duo had the compelling idea to combine both concepts in a highly energetic retelling of English history’s most notorious playboy. During development, Marlow and Moss had this great idea to pattern the queens after pop stars. The duo drew influences from Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande. Marlow and Moss brought in a number of talented people as part of their creative team, such as scenic designer Emma Bailey, costume designer Gabriella Slade, lighting designer Tim Deiling, and many more.
After premiering at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Six caught the attention of established producers. Soon enough, the musical went on a UK Tour in 2018 and finally premiered in London’s West End in 2019 and became the hot new musical that you must see! That same year, the musical went on tour in the U.S. After a highly successful North American run, Six finally opened on Broadway in 2021!
Since its premiere, Six has won numerous prestigious awards. In London, the musical received five Laurence Olivier nominations. Over in Broadway, Six brought home two Tony Awards out of eight nominations. The musical also won four Drama Desk Awards and three Outer Critics Circle Awards. Aside from theater awards, the musical released a recorded album, which hit the U.K. charts. In 2021, the album earned a gold certification in the U.K. Early this year, the album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Music Theater Album.
Besides notable awards, Six has received countless praises from across the world. For instance, what was designed to be a project for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe became an international sensation. Toby Marlow happened to just be assigned to draft a new show by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society. With the help of Moss, Marlow produced one of the hottest and most highly-anticipated new musicals in recent years. And professional theater critics agree!
The Los Angeles Times has nothing but great words for this epic new musical. The review referred to the show as “unapologetically revisionist. Six is only lightly derived from English history, but clearly, it’s inaccurate. Borrowing characters from the Tudor era, Six is a fresh take on the six wives of Henry. “They were all married to the same man, but each handled the situation — and suffered the consequences — in a distinct way.” The review praised the musical’s incredible upbeat music. “You then just have to bring them back to life, dress them in Tudor/Space Age fusion, and send them onstage through a puff of smoke, a halo of stadium lights and, as one song lyric puts it, ‘beats so sick they’ll give you gout,’ to rock the world’s historical assumptions.”
Over in New York, Six received a glowing review from the New York Times. In-house critic Jesse Green commends the musical for its not-so-simple themes, which include feminism and standing up to female degradation. Ultimately, Six ran for 80 minutes, and the critic was left wanting more. “The wit of the conception and the execution — the songs are a slick blend of pop grooves, tight lyrics, and old-fashioned musical theater craft — goes a long way toward keeping the show from sagging.”
Variety compared the musical to the most exciting modern singing competition series, “This fast-paced show — it’s just 80 minutes long — places these Old Spice Girls in a competitive pop-rock concert — think ‘The Six Factor’ — with the wife who is judged as having suffered the most to be elevated to lead singer.”
“Sleek, swift, superbly sung!” – Washington Post
“Explosive” and “joyous!” – The Guardian
